Regulating Sleep and Nutrition

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I do not advocate for working out on an empty stomach. If you do not have glucose in your bloodstream you will not have energy and you’ll end up burning muscle instead of fat. The Army doesn’t see it this way. However, I’ve decided if I’m going to make the most of my civilian time before going into the Army then I’m going to eat before I workout. When I’m at basic training and OCS I’ll do it their way. After the training period is over I will again be free to eat before working out.

I wanted to share my meal plan and some lifestyle changes for getting in shape for basic and OCS. I am a perpetual list-maker and I love writing to sort things out. Therefore, it came simply to me how to figure out my nutritional routine: I wrote it out until I got it right. That being said, there is still trial and error that must occur to work out the problems, but overall I think I’ve planned some wise nutritional changes that work for my schedule and my body. Basically, if I don’t switch things up often I will get bored. So, I’ve created 4 weekly menus of all of my favorite and nutritious foods.

Week A (if I number them I feel like I’m keeping track of the weeks, so I lettered them. I know, weird quirk.): Breakfast: Oatmeal with frozen blueberries and a hardboiled egg. Snack/pre-workout: carrot sticks and hummus. Post workout: 1/2 Clif Bar (NO chocolate varieties; this will set off a sweet tooth that can’t be stopped!), and 1 banana. Dinner: Boiled chicken and stir-fry.

Week B: Breakfast: 2 egg omelette with mushrooms and low-fat turkey bacon. Snack/pre-workout: 1/2 Clif Bar and banana slices. Post workout: other 1/2 of Clif Bar and apple slices. Dinner: Chicken and veggie (bell pepper and spinach) hummus wraps (basically just stuffing a whole wheat pita with chicken, veggies and hummus).

Week C: Breakfast: non-fat greek yogurt with 1/2 whole wheat bagel and three apple slices (1/2 an apple). Snack/pre-workout: 1/2 chicken sandwich (whole wheat bread, cucumber slices, tomato slices, lettuce, boiled and shredded chicken). Post workout: Trail mix and orange slices. Dinner: Turkey patties (super-lean ground turkey) with side veggie.

Week D: Breakfast: Cereal (usually Kashi or some granola), 1/2 whole wheat bagel. Snack/pre-workout: hard-boiled egg and apple slices. Post workout: Clif Bar. Dinner: Boiled chicken with whole wheat pasta and side veggie.

Some regular items on my menu are whole wheat bread and pasta, eggs, vegetables, Clif Bars, and chicken. These are things I normally eat and I wanted to incorporate them into my plan. This menu may seem rather mundane, but the goals of this were to be 1) easy! I’m not a cook and I don’t have time to cook, 2) majority can be prepared in advance, 3) able to support “on-the-go” schedule (portable and okay out of the refrigerator for six hours or so). Above all this nutritional plan needed to support my fitness goals and I hope it is doing just that. I will post updates to follow up on how this turns out. (Also, I’m a student so this has to be affordable. After number-crunching the 4 week plan comes out to $30.50 per week).

The lifestyle goal I commented on earlier is sleep. I have posted before about my erratic sleep schedule and I’m sick of it. I need more consistency in my sleep to help my body fall into a healthy rhythm. Therefore, I am committing myself to waking up at 6am on Mondays and Wednesdays (early class) and 7 am on all other days. I may allow myself to sleep until 8am on Sundays, but I don’t want to throw my body off schedule by sleeping in by more than 2 hours. This goal won’t be difficult when I start up with school again. My school schedule motivates me to get up. However, for the last two weeks of summer break, I’m having trouble finding the motivation to wake up so early for no reason. If there is one motivating factor it is working out in the morning before the heat of the day hits. Then, it gets hot outside and hot inside and I don’t want to move a muscle!


SF-86: Personal Problems

I know I will have to fill out an SF-86 for my Army career and looking into what the form entails, I think it’s best that I’m starting a year and a half early. Firstly, I have some personal problems: no references. I feel like such a loner and a sociopath typing this, but the truth is that I’m a very private and reserved person. I don’t like socializing and I don’t think having friends should be a requirement for joining the Army as an officer. But, really, they ask you for references for each place you’ve lived for the past 7-10 years, plus three personal references, plus contact information for each employer you’ve had during that time as well! I never talk to my neighbors, I never have kept contact with former employers, and I have no friends or acquaintences that can vouch for me.

Now, I consider myself to be a good person. I’ve worked with children and animals and I think I’m compassionate and reasonable. I’ve spent five years in the workforce and four years at college and I’ve gotten along fine with everyone.  I think I’m personable and, although I don’t have the friends to prove it, I think I make a good friend. In all honesty, I moved to the city I live in now right after high school and shortly thereafter met my boyfriend (now husband). I’ve spent all of my free time with my husband or alone and that is the way I like it. But this isolation has a cost: I don’t know what to do about filling out this form. I only have three or four family members who even know me well enough to comment on the person that I am today. Some people out there are super critical of this; if you don’t have friends then something must be wrong with you. Yes, I guess that by their standards something is wrong with me… I am reserved.

So, I fear also that if I ask a recruiter about this then I’ll get a response like, “Do the best you can.” Ya, well, I can do the best that I can and my application may be denied due to it being incomplete or insufficient. But what can I do? I cannot make up for ten years of being reserved with new friends that can only give a reference for the last year. References need to span all 7-10 years. Overall, I don’t think that having a lack of references will make me look like a terrorist or a true sociopath (those people just manipulate and are actually very personable when they know it will benefit themselves), but I fear that it will hurt my chances of being branched military intelligence.

Why I Want to Be an Army Officer

In an officer candidate’s application checklist there may be an item listed requiring an essay to be written on the topic of “Why I Want to Be an Army Officer.” This item varies by state and by recruiting station from what I’ve been able to find out. Some applicants must type a page on this subject and also include an exact handwritten copy in their application paperwork. Other applicants must type the one page essay, include it in their application packet and then handwrite a similar essay on the day and at the place of their board interview (for example, I read about an applicant who had to write their essay from memory an hour or so before they went in to their boards).

I do not know what the future holds for me regarding how my essays will  be handled. I can only hope that I write a great composition therefore I am going to seek out all the help I can get on this. I’ve taken numerous writing classes and writing has always been one of my stronger academic areas, however, I’m not going to wing it when it comes to my impression on the people who will be determining my future in the military. Without giving away my literary jewel that I call my essay, I would like to share my reasoning for why I want to be an Army officer.

Firstly, I have a deep sense of volunteerism ingrained in my character. I have volunteered throughout my entire life and I feel being in the military is the ultimate form of volunteerism. But, when a person reaches a certain point in their lives, volunteering 5 or 10 hours here and there doesn’t cut it anymore. I am wanting to make a greater contribution to my country, therefore being an Army officer is my ideal career. Working in the  private sector would eventually consume all of my time and energy and I probably wouldn’t make as big of contribution to my community through volunteering. This is not the future I want for myself because I know I am able to make a difference and contribute to a larger goal.

Next, I love America. I didn’t used to be so patriotic but I have realized that I have been born into and had the privilege of living in one of the greatest countries in the world. Majoring in International Studies has shown me how defunct the world can be, and of course the U.S. is not without its flaws, however, comparatively speaking America is a well oiled machine (ha ha ha… there’s a little pun in there). We have healthcare, schools, relative wealth, functional business, industry, a bounty of fresh water and readily available food. This is a great country and from a cultural standpoint I am thoroughly American. I am independent. I am competitive. I believe people have the right to a peaceful assembly. I believe people have the right to follow any faith they choose. I like my culture. I like going to a restaurant and getting my food quickly, having the check automatically arrive, and being able to swipe my debit card to pay. I believe I’d make an excellent officer because I love America and I am a true American.

Lastly, it is actually a pretty cool gig. Think about it; you get a four-year degree and if you have federal student loans, the Army will help you to pay off that debt. In the Student Loan Repayment Program, all of my federal loans should be taken care of. Then, they give you all of the training you need on top of already having a degree. They teach you how to be a leader although a lot of your personal characteristics are sure to help you in leadership roles. They require you to be fit and pay you to maintain good health. You wouldn’t get those incentives in the private sector. They teach you how to shoot and gun and use weapons–including using your own body as a weapon–which is training you wouldn’t get in a private sector job. In fact, liking guns and weapons may scare your private sector co-workers whereas in the military you are just a normal person. The Army will pay for housing and healthcare, on top of training you how to do a job that can be quite lucrative if you ever decide to leave the Army. You can live in numerous stateside and worldwide locations if you are in the Army, whereas if you were in the private sector you’d be chained to one city until you decide to quit your job to move somewhere new. 

Obviously, I’m not blind to why the Army gives all of these seemingly good deals out to Army personnel. I know it’s because they want their Army to be the best and most prepared Army possible. They want to ensure Army personnel  is working in peak condition because we may be called on to fight for our country. And ultimately, that is what being an Army officer is about; leading in the defense of our country, organizing the flow of people and materials, and making hard decisions that others are unwilling or unable to make.

Working Hard Working Out

To be honest, I’m not in good physical condition. I’m not a total slob and I’m not noticeably overweight, but I can tell that I am out of shape and that I need to overcome many fitness obstacles to physically qualify for OCS. I am ashamed of this and I can only blame myself for getting out of shape. I am sharing this with you because I know there are people out there in my position. I want to be truthful about what type of physical condition I am starting in so that I can document the improvements that I hope to be making. I was a cheerleader in high school and I maintained a good physique after high school while eating and drinking whatever I wanted. But, life has caught up and I am in that period where I can no longer eat whatever I want, and if I want to stay in shape I actually must work at it! So pair these changes with being a full time student and (BOOM!) I am out of shape. I have worked out periodically during my time in college but it never has lasted long term. So, now I’m looking to make some lifestyle changes because working out and staying in shape will be a requirement of my job in the future, which is part of the reason why I like the idea of being a soldier; I will be paid and expected to stay in shape!

So here is the truth of my physical fitness as of Feb. 13, 2011:

     Push-ups: 10 on my knees to muscle failure (2 minute test TBA)

     Sit-ups: 50 in one minute to muscle failure (2 minute test TBA)

     2 mile run: oh my god! I can’t even run a mile right now! Mile time: 13:41. That’s running on a treadmill at 5.5 mph for a half-mile and then walking the rest as fast as I could.

Ouch! It’s hard to write and it’s hard to read. But I have been doing the right things to advance my fitness base. I have a locker at my college gym which is quite a nice feature because I don’t have to pack a big bag full of workout clothes to school everyday. I bought a new pair of running shoes and some new workout clothes. I am trying to go to the gym three days a week but to be honest I’m not a gym person. And, there is a huge problem at my school’s gym: girls (and guys!) go to the gym to workout together, but they all just want to chit-chat or text on their phones and they are the biggest burden in the world! I watched a girl on the lat-pulldown machine just sitting there texting while I waited and waited and waited for her to get off! How rude! I even asked her if she was resting and she said yes! How could that be?! She wasn’t sweating. She wasn’t breathing hard. She was just using the lat-pulldown machine like a fricken park bench.

I know, I know. If I want to get a serious workout I should join Crossfit. Crossfit is something I’m considering, however, I am a student and I don’t have any money. So, I may join Crossfit in the future when I’ll really benefit from that kind of mentality and functional-type workout, and also when I am fit enough to keep up. So, for now, I’ll endure the stupid college gym if it means that it will get me closer to my goals. Thinking about being a PT stud at basic and OCS keeps me going during my workouts, knowing that if I push myself now it will be easier for me in the future.

Deciding to document the journey

Well, this is my first post of what I’m sure is going to be a long journey to joining the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School. I have read several blogs, forums, and general question and answers regarding the process from start to finish, but I find that they are sometimes incomplete, out-dated, or simply don’t apply to me. I’ve googled every key word that has to do with the Army and joining the Army for the purposes of attending OCS. I’ve read the information provided on,,,, and just to name a few. If you are looking for answers to what you can expect there are many resources out there, and I suggest reading from a variety of different sources so that you can get as full view as possible about what you may be getting into.

I know that my searching for answers is far from over, and so I wanted to contribute something to this wonderful community of people who are willing to tell every detail about joining the Army. I know that I will have many more moments of “huh?” along the way and in an effort to lessen those moments for future candidates, I’ve decided to share my experience with you, the internet. You are my best friend, internet. You always have the answers and you are a wealth of information. In fact, I got my recruiter’s phone number and address from your brain, internet. What I’m getting at is I don’t know who will read this and I’m just putting it out there, on the internet, for future OCS bound civilians to stumble upon just as I stumbled upon my inspiration for this project.
